Did you know that May is National Date Your Mate Month? I didn’t either until just a few days ago.

The past 2 months have been stressful for me and Jake as we focused on settling into Phnom Penh, figuring out our lives here, and finding jobs. We both understand how important it is to strengthen our friendship by continuing to date. However, we haven’t been intentional about it so a lot of what we do together has now become routine.

“Friendship is a deep oneness that develops when two people, speaking the truth in love to one another, journey together to the same horizon.”

~ Timothy J. Keller,  The Meaning of Marriage

We have decided to be more intentional in May about planning and going on dates that help us connect while enjoying each other’s company. I proposed spending 15-20 minutes of quality time every single day this month with a weekly date that involves more planning and leaving the house. Trust me, time invested in your marriage relationship will generate some of the biggest returns in your life.

“Marriage has the power to set the course of your life as a whole. If your marriage is strong, even if all the circumstances in your life around you are filled with trouble and weakness, it won’t matter. You will be able to move out into the world in strength.”

~ Timothy J. Keller, The Meaning of Marriage

So friend, will you join us this month to date your mate with more intentionality? To get you started, I’ll share a few date ideas that my husband and I have really enjoyed.

Read a book together. Literally sit next to each other and read from the same book. Jake and I are currently reading through The Meaning of Marriage (can you tell??). We just love being able to discuss what we read when it’s still fresh on our minds. We love doing this in coffee shops!

Take the Enneagram test. If you haven’t already, make this a date and take the free assessment. Find out your type(s) and read about your type combination. You’ll learn what each of you bring to your relationship and potential trouble spots you should watch out for.

Themed movie night. Jake introduced this to me 2 years ago and it’s so much fun. Instead of dinner and a movie out, we would choose a movie to watch at home and either buy snacks or cook a meal together that fit the theme of the movie. I remember Jake surprising me with The Martian and MREs. He even got freeze dried ice cream for dessert. This is a great way to get creative and try something new.

Picnic at home. This has got to be one of my favorite dates. While I was in a women’s Bible class on a Sunday last winter, Jake built a fort in our living room and bought all sorts of picnic food. We spent the whole afternoon and evening snacking, talking, cuddling, and binge watching White Collar. Sometimes, you just need to forget the hustle and bustle and relax with your spouse.

I’m a huge believer in journaling and memory keeping so I created this free downloadable journaling page for you. Every time you get back from a date, take about 5-10 minutes to fill it out. There’s even a spot to attach a photo.
